How to Calculate Gas Mileage

A longer mileage window smooths out the noise of traffic lights, hills and a single cold start, so 200 to 400 miles between fills gives a steadier figure than a quick run. The Conversions Used Here
US gallons and imperial gallons are different sizes, and this calculator works with US gallons, the standard at almost all pumps in North America. One US gallon equals 3.78541 liters and one mile equals 1.609344 kilometers, and chaining those two constants produces the conversion ratios you see: 1 MPG equals about 235.215 liters per 100 kilometers and about 0.425144 kilometers per liter. If your odometer shows kilometers and the pump delivers liters, enter the figures without converting — the ratios still handle the arithmetic correctly because distance over fuel is the same idea in both systems.
Fuel Price and Cost per Mile
The price of fuel does not influence the fuel economy itself — a car that burns one gallon over ten miles will do so whether that gallon costs three dollars or five — so the gas price field is optional. When you do enter it, the calculator works out your total cost per fill and the cost per mile. The distance is 44,980 minus 44,000, which is 980 miles, and the gas mileage is 980 divided by 35, which is 28.0 MPG. The liters-per-100km reading is 235.215 divided by 28, about 8.4, and at a price of $4.20 per gallon the trip cost 35 times 4.20, or $147.00, which works out to 15.0 cents per mile. What Affects Real-World MPG
Sticker fuel economy is measured on a laboratory cycle, and normal driving never perfectly matches it. Speed matters more than most people expect: steady cruising around 55 to 60 miles per hour is the efficiency sweet spot for many cars, while pushing past 70 or 75 makes the engine work far harder against air resistance.
