US Gallons, Imperial Gallons, Liters

Fuel conventions vary as you cross borders, and misunderstandings about units cause real errors. The calculator works in US gallons because that is the standard for MPG ratings in the United States. The imperial gallon used in the UK and several Commonwealth countries is about 20 percent bigger, so UK figures cannot be entered directly — a UK vehicle rated 50 mpg uses roughly the same fuel as a US-rated 42 mpg.
