What is a body type?

A body type, in the fashion and clothing industry, is a shorthand label for the overall silhouette created by a few simple circumference measurements: the bust, the natural waist, the high hip and the widest part of the hip. Instead of describing a person's size, these labels describe how the bust and hip relate to each other and how much definition the waist has. The best known names come from women's fashion: hourglass, pear (or triangle), apple, banana (or rectangle), and inverted triangle.

It is worth being direct about what these labels are and are not. They are styling conventions used to help shoppers pick flattering cuts, discuss proportions and compare how different garments fall on different frames. They are not a measure of health, fitness, or attractiveness, and they do not reflect a "good" or "bad" body. A 2005 study at North Carolina State University of more than 6,000 women found that roughly 46% were classified as banana (rectangle), just over 20% as pear, just under 14% as apple, and only about 8% as hourglass — the most commonly described category turned out to be the least common in practice, which is a useful reminder that no single silhouette is typical.

How to take the four measurements

Measurement quality matters more than the formula. A tape pulled too tight, tilted at an angle, or placed over bulky clothing can shift the result by a category. Use a soft tailor's tape and a mirror if possible. Stand straight with your feet together, arms relaxed at your sides, and breathe normally.

  • Bust — the circumference around the chest at the fullest part of the bust, taken while wearing a properly fitted, unpadded bra. The tape should sit level across the shoulder blades.
  • Waist — the smallest circumference around the natural waist, which sits just above the belly button. If your waist does not visibly pinch in, bend sideways once; the crease that forms is your natural waistline.
  • High hip — the circumference of the upper swell of the hip over the pelvic region, roughly 7 inches (18 cm) below the natural waist. This is the measurement used to separate "spoon" from "bottom hourglass" shapes.
  • Hip — the largest circumference around the hips over the fullest part of the buttocks, again keeping the tape level.

Take each measurement twice and use the repeatable value. The calculator accepts both inches and centimetres — switch the unit tab before entering values, and the thresholds are compared in a single consistent unit internally.

How the classification works

The shape logic used here is a well-known 7-category algorithm from the clothing research literature (Lee, Istook, Nam & Park, 2007, International Journal of Clothing Science and Technology), the same basis the reference calculator uses. It works with simple differences in inches:

Rules are tested in the order shown and the first match wins. Two rules can both be true for some measurement sets — for example a "spoon" figure can also satisfy part of the "triangle" condition — so ordering is part of the definition. The key inputs are:

  • Bust minus hip — tells the algorithm whether the shoulder-bust line or the hip line dominates the silhouette.
  • Hip minus waist — the "waist definition" distance; 9–10 inches of difference is what creates the hourglass signal.
  • High hip ÷ waist — distinguishes a bottom hourglass (hip fullness carried low and rounded) from a spoon (fullness pushed up into the pelvic area).

Reading your result

Our output shows a category index 1–7 with its name underneath, plus three supporting numbers. Let's walk through a concrete example. A woman with bust 37 in, waist 31 in, high hip 37 in and hip 42 in has:

WHR = 31 ÷ 42 = 0.738 · Bust − hip = −5 in · Hip − waist = 11 in

Hip minus bust is 5 inches, so the hip line dominates; high hip divided by waist is 37/31 = 1.19, just under 1.193, so the algorithm reports "triangle" — the classic pear. If the same figure measured high hip 37.5 in, the ratio would cross 1.193 and the label would change to "spoon". That is the practical sensitivity of the method: a fraction of an inch at the high hip can flip the category, which is why the supporting deltas matter more than the label.

For styling, the usual advice is to balance the dominant line: pear silhouettes suit fitted tops and wider-leg trousers; inverted triangles suit V-necks and A-line skirts; rectangles benefit from peplums and structured waists; hourglass and spoon figures generally suit defined waistlines. None of this is a rule — it is a starting point, and the same body can wear almost anything well.

Waist-to-hip ratio and health

Far more studied than the fashion labels is the waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), simply waist ÷ hip. A person with a 34 in waist and 40 in hip has a WHR of 0.85. The reason researchers care is fat distribution: people who carry weight around the middle ("apple-like") have higher health risks than people who carry it around the hips and thighs ("pear-like"), independent of total weight.

  • The U.S. National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases flags WHRs above 0.8 for women and above 1.0 for men as carrying higher health risk from fat distribution.
  • The World Health Organization uses a WHR above 0.90 for men and above 0.85 for women as an obesity indicator (roughly equivalent to a BMI above 30).
  • Research such as the Yusuf et al. study in The Lancet (2005) found that if obesity were defined by WHR instead of BMI, the share of the population flagged as at risk of heart attack would roughly triple.
  • In some studies WHR predicted cardiovascular disease and mortality in older adults better than either waist circumference alone or BMI.

The mechanism is visceral fat: abdominal fat tissue is metabolically more active and releases more inflammatory markers than the fat under the skin of the hips and thighs. That does not mean a high WHR is a diagnosis — it is one signal among many. Limitations worth knowing

First, the seven categories cover most but not all female silhouettes. Very busty figures, very straight figures, and post-pregnancy bodies may straddle boundaries, and the algorithm will assign the nearest category anyway — or fall through to "rectangle" as the default, which is not the same as being rectangle-shaped. Second, the system was developed for adult women; it does not apply meaningfully to children, and there is no accepted male equivalent of these fashion categories. Third, individual clothing brands fit differently, so a shape label does not guarantee a size. Fourth, the algorithm assumes correctly placed tape; if you measured over jeans or at a tilted angle, retake the measurement before acting on the result.

Hourglass (Shape 3)

With balanced bust and hip measurements and a well-defined waist, hourglass figures look great in fitted styles that accentuate the waist. Wrap dresses, belted coats, and tailored pieces that cinch at the waist will highlight your natural curves. Avoid boxy or shapeless garments that hide your waistline. V-necks and scoop necks work well, as do peplum tops that draw attention to your narrowest point.

Pear/Triangle (Shape 2)

With hips wider than your bust, the goal is to balance your proportions by adding volume to your upper body. Boat necks, wide necklines, and structured shoulders can broaden your upper half. Darker bottoms with lighter or patterned tops can also create balance. A-line skirts and wide-leg pants work well, as do jackets that end at the hip.
