How Much Mulch Do I Need?

Multiplying feet by feet gives square feet, and multiplying those square feet by the depth in inches, converted to a fraction of a foot, gives the volume in cubic feet.

Most people think in terms of cubic yards when buying bulk mulch, because landscape suppliers price and deliver by the yard. One cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet, roughly the load a pickup truck can carry. A 12 by 10 foot bed with a 3 inch layer needs about 30 cubic feet, or a little over one cubic yard. Measuring Your Garden Bed Correctly

Start with length and width in feet. Use a tape measure along the longest and widest points of the bed, and for rectangular beds the math is exact. A roughly circular tree ring becomes pi times the radius squared, and a triangular corner bed is half the base times the height.

Choosing the Right Mulch Depth

The depth you select drives the volume more than any other choice, so it is worth getting it right. A layer of 2 to 4 inches is the sweet spot for most flower beds and gardens. At this depth mulch retains soil moisture, regulates soil temperature and suppresses weeds without starving the soil of air or water.
