Few numbers in a student's life carry as much weight as the grade point average. It appears on transcripts, scholarship applications, job interviews and graduate school forms, and it distills an entire semester of work into a single decimal between zero and four. The GPA Calculator estimates that number for a term of up to five courses: pick a letter grade for each course, set the credit hours, and the tool immediately shows your GPA, your total grade points and your total credits.

What Is a GPA?

GPA stands for grade point average. It is the credit-weighted arithmetic mean of your course grades, expressed on a scale that usually runs from 0.0 to 4.0. Instead of averaging letter grades directly — which would treat a two-credit lab the same as a four-credit lecture — the GPA system first converts every letter into a number, multiplies that number by the course's credit hours, and then divides the total by all the credits. A course you took for 4 credits moves the average far more than a 1-credit seminar, which is exactly the weighting a transcript should have.

The scale used here is the standard unweighted 4.0 scale: A+ and A equal 4.0, A− equals 3.7, B+ 3.3, B 3.0, B− 2.7, C+ 2.3, C 2.0, C− 1.7, D+ 1.3, D 1.0, and F equals 0.0. Some institutions add a third decimal place or treat A+ as 4.3; this calculator uses the most common convention and says so in its assumptions, so you can compare results against your own college's policy.

How the Calculator Works

The tool presents five course rows, each with a grade dropdown and a credit slider. For every row the calculator multiplies the grade's numeric value by the credit count to get that course's grade points. It then adds the five courses' points to get the total grade points, adds the credits to get the total credits, and finally divides the two:

GPA = (grade₁ × credits₁ + grade₂ × credits₂ + … + grade₅ × credits₅) ÷ (credits₁ + credits₂ + … + credits₅)

The three results are shown separately — the GPA itself, the total points and the total credits — so you can see exactly which number is being divided by which. Every result recalculates the moment any grade or credit changes, which makes the tool an excellent "what-if" machine: drop a grade, bump a credit count, watch the average move.

A Worked Example

Suppose a student takes five courses with these results:

The points are each grade value multiplied by the credits. Totalling the points column gives 50.6, the credits column gives 15, and 50.6 ÷ 15 = 3.37. That 3.37 is the semester GPA — the number this calculator produces in real time as you enter the same grades and credits.

Notice what the weighting did: the 4-credit A contributed 16 points, while the 2-credit C+ contributed only 4.6, so the strong performance in the heavy course lifted the average far more than the weak performance in the light one dragged it down. A simple unweighted average of the letters would have produced a different, less honest number.

Grade Point Scales Around the World

Different countries and even different departments within one university count grades differently. The 4.0 scale used here is the international standard for US-style grading. Many institutions use a percentage-based system where 90–100 is an A, some use a 10-point CGPA scale (India) where the number is multiplied rather than added, and others award grade points out of 7 or 12. The calculator is deliberately built on the 4.0 convention, because it is the scale transcripts and scholarship forms most often ask for; if your institution works in percentages or CGPA, the conversion calculator can help translate between the systems when a number must move between them.

One subtlety worth knowing: some schools count A+ as 4.3 on a 4.0 scale and some do not. Here A+ and A both equal 4.0, the most common convention. If your transcript uses 4.3, the difference only appears for a small set of students — and only in the courses where they earned the plus grade.

Weighted Versus Unweighted GPA

An unweighted GPA treats every course the same: an A in a regular course and an A in an advanced placement course both contribute 4.0. A weighted GPA adds bonus points for advanced coursework — typically 0.5 to 1.0 extra per grade — so a student taking the hardest available courses can reach 5.0 or higher. This calculator is unweighted, which is the right default for most purposes: transcripts that report a single GPA usually report the unweighted one, and scholarship thresholds are stated in the same language.

If your school weights AP, IB or honors courses, you can approximate the effect here by adding the bonus into the grade you select — or simply use the tool for your honest unweighted number and keep the weighted figure for the report that needs it. Either way, the mechanics of the average — points divided by credits — stay the same.

Why Credits Matter

Credit hours are the weight in the weighted average, and they are the detail most students get wrong when they compute a GPA by hand. A common mistake is averaging the grade values without considering credits: for grades 4.0, 3.3, 3.0 and 2.0 in four equal courses, the plain average is (4.0 + 3.3 + 3.0 + 2.0) ÷ 4 = 3.08 — which is also what the GPA calculator gives when every course has the same credit count. But if that 4.0 course was worth 5 credits and the 2.0 course worth 1, the correct GPA is higher than the plain average because the strong course dominates the total. Getting this right matters for scholarship cutoffs that sit on a boundary like 3.50.

The calculator never forgets the weighting. Slide a course's credit slider from 1 to 6 and watch the GPA drift toward that course's grade: raising the credits of a course you aced lifts the average; raising the credits of a course you barely passed drags it down. There is a difference between a semester GPA and a cumulative GPA. The semester figure covers one term; the cumulative figure covers every course a student has ever taken.
